Plymouth Office Workers Score High on Sick Day Survey

A recent survey that asked 10,000 office workers across the UK about pretending to be off sick resulted in Plymouth workers being the most honest.

FreeOfficeFinder, who help businesses find office space, asked the 10,000 participants a number of questions on whether or not they have had time off work without actually being sick in the past year. The 10,000 workers were split between 10 cities which included London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Plymouth.

The questions included asking respondents whether they'd lied about taking time off and the actual reasons behind their absence.

Out of the 1,000 office workers from Plymouth who were asked, only 186 of them admitted to lying about taking time off in the past year. This is way below the average of 302, and Plymouth was the only city where less than 20% of those surveyed admitted to lying. (Leicester was the least honest city, with 489 admitting to lying about taking time off).

Interestingly, of all 3027 office workers who had admitted to lying about time off in the past year, 1473 of those claimed that a hangover was the main reason behind their absence. nearly half of all respondents.

Another interesting finding was that younger office workers were less likely to lie about taking time off, with the 31-35 age bracket scoring the lowest.

Possible Reasons

It's difficult to tell why there was such a big difference between places like Plymouth and Leicester. One possible reason is that Plymouth is home to a number of smaller businesses without the perks of some of the larger companies. Larger companies tend to pay staff in full for time off sick whereas a smaller business is more likely to only pay the minimum requirements for staff sickness.

It's also possible that Plymouth workers can handle their drink better than the rest of the country! Or that perhaps Plymouth workers limit their alcohol intake to the weekend.
