A Plymouth elearning company has donated eight boxes of festive food to Plymouth Foodbank in time for Christmas.

Sponge UK, based at Plymouth Science Park, paid a visit to the foodbank at Manor Street, Stonehouse on Thursday, December 17 to drop off the boxes crammed with seasonal items such as mince pies, gravy granules and stuffing mix to help towards creating Christmas dinner packs for families in need.

Staff at the firm, which creates online training for large companies, decided to pool together some complimentary gift vouchers they had been sent by one of their clients.

With some extra money donated by employees, the community-minded team at Sponge UK were able to buy more than £150 worth of supplies for the foodbank.

Plymouth Foodbank volunteer, Mark Jenkins (pictured) said: “There’s a big demand at this time of the year and that means we need a lot of donations. At Christmas, I’d say the demand is double, even triple what it is normally so we need as much help as possible.”

Anyone wishing to donate festive goods to the foodbank is encouraged to do so as soon as possible, with the charity welcoming items such as children’s selection boxes, toys and toiletries, as well as tinned and packet groceries.

All-year-round, the foodbank also needs non-perishable items with dried UHT milk powder and nappies always outstripping supply.
