The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the Easter weekend.

High winds are expected to affect Devon on Saturday with gusts of 40-50mph in some inland areas, possibly topping 60mph across exposed coasts and hills.

The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain at times.

The warning is valid from 7am-9pm.

The Exter-based agency’s chief forecaster said: “An active frontal zone is expected to move east across the country through Saturday, accompanied by strong, gusty winds and one or two spells of heavy rain.

“Whilst expected wind gusts will not be unusual for March, the fact that it is Easter may lead to a few extra problems. Winds should ease markedly as the front clears through.”

The five day regional forecast for Devon is as follows:

Today:
After a chilly start for some, it will be a largely dry and fine day with sunny spells, especially through the morning. Winds will be lighter making it feel warmer. Maximum Temperature14 °C.

Tonight:
Dry through the evening but turning breezier. Winds strengthening further overnight, especially across western coasts where gales are possible, with patchy rain reaching most areas towards dawn. Minimum Temperature5 °C.

Saturday:
Patchy rain will turn heavy through Saturday as an organised band of persistent rain pushes east. Very windy with gales around coasts and hills. Rain and wind easing by evening. Maximum Temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Sunday, brighter but colder with showers, locally heavy with hail, thunder and gusty winds. Turning very wet and windy on Monday. Cooler on Tuesday with sunshine and blustery showers.
