Plymouth's new coach station begins to take shape

The site in the West End of the city centre has been a hive of construction over the last few months and we have some great timelapse footage, so that you can see change happening on the ground.

The entire site has been levelled and perimeter walls built. Foundations have been laid for the giant canopies which have now been erected and will cover the eastern end where the passenger facilities will be.

The car park perimeter walls are nearly finished and the car park area and the road around the site is due to be surfaced later this month.

Outside the new station, work is ongoing in Mayflower Street to change the layout of the road and pavements as well as install new traffic lights.

SWH Civils’ Contracts Manager, Hannah Jones, said: “It is a complex and challenging project but we are making good progress. It was great to see the steel structures of the canopies installed as it was a good benchmark.

“It was also the first real visual element that shows the scale of the scheme and quality of finish that will be achieved.”

The construction company is talking to businesses that overlook the site to see how they can keep inconvenience to a minimum. She added: “We’d like to thank them for their patience and understanding while this project is ongoing.”

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport, Housing and Planning, Councillor Patrick Nicholson said: “Whilst many of us were concerned about the development of a coach station on this site, it’s incredible how much work has taken place in the city centre over the last few months with comparatively little disruption. Hats off to those who have managed to achieve this.

“It will be good to see this new facility for visitors finished as soon as possbile to provide a fresh new welcome for visitors coming by coach to Britain’s Ocean City.”
