Plymouth is sometimes overlooked in lists of interesting places in the UK, but there are many things to celebrate about our fine city. There is so much history, things to see and do and so many reasons to be thankful for this city. Yes, it has suffered heavy WWII bomb damage, but it has been revived in recent years to where locals and tourists alike can enjoy all there is to offer. We have the beautiful waterfront, plenty of places to go and spend time with family and friends and activities to keep you exploring new places and trying new things.

Here are some of the many things to love about Plymouth:

The Guardian named Plymouth number five in The Happiest Places to Work in the UK. This could be for many reasons- the strong sense of community here, the amazing location and greenery, or perhaps the relaxed pace that people tend to go about their day. For those of us looking for a new career and are keen to stay within the beauty of Devon and avoid moving to the capital, there is a long list of current available jobs in Plymouth waiting to be snapped up by potential candidates.

The Barbican and Sutton Harbour is lined with quaint cobbled streets, independent shops, cafes, restaurants and galleries. You can also find the Elizabethan Gardens and plenty of spots to get some fresh air and pick up on the energy of the area.

Plymouth Gin Distillery is the oldest working gin distillery in England. Since 1793, it has been the working home of Plymouth Gin. Gin has had somewhat of a renaissance in recent years with many places now hosting their own gin festivals- our historic distillery puts Plymouth right at the centre of this trend.

Europe’s biggest free fireworks show takes place here each August. Over Plymouth Sound, pyrotechnics teams battle for the UK national title in the British Fireworks Championships and viewers get to enjoy the show.

The Mayflower Museum is a historical site where you can explore the story of the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers. You can learn about their journey to the New World aboard the Mayflower and also enjoy panoramic views of the Barbican and harbour.

Head up on the Wheel and gain new perspective. You can even book a VIP capsule (champagne included). With spectacular views it is also quite a romantic spot should you be after an unusual date”

Want to get active? The Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre is near Plymouth Sound and hosts multi-activity courses, group activities and even instructor-led courses. You can try abseiling, kayaking, caving, gorge walking, rock climbing and more.

The Theatre Royal is a must for theatre lovers. It is the largest and best-attended regional producing theatre in the UK and specialises in the production of new plays. A lot of famous faces have been seen treading the boards here over the years!

Mount Edgcumbe County Park offers green space and a place to relax and enjoy the beautiful land. It is the former home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe and is open all year round and free to the public from 8am to dusk.

National Marine Aquarium is the UK’s largest Aquarium and perfect for people of all ages. It is a registered charity committed to helping understand and raise awareness about the sea through programmes of education, conservation and research. You can see all sorts of shark species, sea horses, interactive dive shoes and even step outside to enjoy breath-taking views.

This is just a small selection of reasons to celebrate Plymouth and locals will have their own list of things they love about their hometown. It’s time to change the general perception of this great city and celebrate it for all that it is!
