Bake-off raises dough for charity
RAISING dough for charity has never been more fun than at the Plymouth Science Park with a special fundraising Bake Off event.
Baking aficionados among the 800 staff at the centre were asked to bring in their home made bakes in aid of the Chestnut Appeal for prostate cancer.
Winning entries included a six tiered cake, an apple and nut cake and a delectable lemon drizzle cake. All winning entries were sold off after judging.
Speaking at the inaugural event, where the amazing home-made cakes were sold off for charity, Plymouth Science Park Director of Operations Christian Jenkins said: “We always like to try to keep our clients full and happy and we are delighted to be supporting such a worthwhile charity while having an afternoon of fun.”
The event was organised by pharmacologist Dr Mel Priston who runs the CP3 Analysis Laboratory on Plymouth Science Park. It was part of her campaign to raise money, and awareness, about the Chestnut Appeal - which included a sponsored skydive.
Dr Priston leapt from a plane15,000 feet above Dunkeswell Airfield near Honiton with her partner Nick Bennett and friend Jo Melvin.
“I was inspired by a leaflet that someone gave me in the park that said ‘do something fearless today!’ so I did!” she said. “We have a friend who has prostate cancer so decided to raise money for The Chestnut Appeal so it is a cause close to my heart.”
The skydive alone raised £854 and with the proceeds of the cake sale Dr Mel is planning to hand over more than £1,000 to the Plymouth-based charity which will use it to buy equipment for their Derriford unit.
