Tackling new heights to support the children’s ward

Plymouth hospital ward administrator Gill Trewalla will be conquering her fear of heights on Saturday 15 June, weather permitting, to raise money for the Children’s Happy Hospital Fund by taking on the challenge of a 490m zip wire ride.

After her grandson Bradley Horne was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma at just 10 weeks old, Gill has seen his bravery and strength over the last 10 years which has inspired her to help support other families while they are in hospital.

Gill explains: “The staff on the children’s ward were very supportive to both my grandson and daughter and I would just like to help make what can be a very stressful time a little less stressful for other families who are potentially going through the same scenario. If the money I raise can help in any way with that, it will be worth every ounce of fear I have.

Sue Rodgers, Children’s Happy Hospital Fund Treasurer and Play Specialist Team Leader said: “We are always happy when someone who has experienced the care on our wards wishes to raise funds to help to enhance these areas.

“It acknowledges the care that has been given to their loved ones particularly at difficult and stressful times.  We are particularly impressed with the bravery of Gill in taking on a zip wire ride, knowing that she is scared of heights. She is an inspiration and we all want to wish her well.”

The Zip at Adrenalin Quarry in South East Cornwall is the UK’s biggest zip wire at 490m long, 50m high and reaching speeds of 40mph over a quarry lake.
