Ensuring children with special educational needs get the right support
A review of the education provision provided for children and young people with special educational needs/disability (SEND) in Plymouth has been approved by the City Council’s Cabinet.
There are currently 2,000 children in Plymouth with a statutory statement of special educational needs and the SEND review of education provision will make sure the Council is providing the best provision for their needs now, and into the future as Plymouth expands.
The Council has been working very closely with schools to develop this framework with their views absolutely essential to its development.
Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health said: “We are responsible for the provision of services for children in Plymouth with special educational needs/disability, so this review will make sure we have clear policies in place to ensure children and young people can access the appropriate support and provision.
“We are absolutely committed to making sure that the provision we have in place for young people meets their needs and supports their progress towards independence and employment.
“The thoughts and opinions of children and young people with SEND, their parents and carers, schools, health service staff and other partners will play a huge part in anything we do.”
One of the key Issues that will be addressed in this review will be an understanding of the needs of the individual children and young people who will access the services to be commissioned. It will also:
- Improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND and their families
- Involve and engage children and young people with SEND and their families
- Ensure the highest possible quality of provision and services
Plymouth City Council’s aim is to ensure that through early planning and regular review of the SEND needs of children and young people in Plymouth, we can continue to provide a strong SEND offer in schools which promotes inclusion and provides the specialist provision when this is the right choice for every child and young person in future years.
