Secondary school place allocations announced for September

The number of young people applying for a secondary school place has increased this year and thousands of primary pupils in Plymouth will today find out which school they will be going to this September.

The Council have confirmed that 93.16 per cent of young people received their first choice of school, 5 per cent their second and 1.27 per cent their third. Less than one per cent did not receive any of the schools they listed as a preference.

Letters and emails confirming school places for September 2016 were sent to parents today. Schools have also been given the admissions information relating to their children so parents are also able to ask teachers directly for confirmation of their child’s secondary school place.

2,930 young people submitted applications for a secondary school this year. That compares with 2,855 last year, when the Council was able to match 94.82 per cent with their first choice of secondary school.

Councillor Sue McDonald, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health said: “We’re extremely pleased that yet again we have been able to match the overwhelming majority of young people with their first choice of secondary school. We understand how emotive the decision of secondary schooling is for parents and our school admissions team aims to match as many parents requests as they possibly can. Any parent who wants their child to be considered for a grammar school place in September 2017 will need to register for the 11+ examination between 25 April 2016 and 2 September 2016.
