PWA Heatwave delivers a hot night of action

The crowd were red hot for Plymouth Wrestling Association’s apply titled ‘Heat Wave’ event. The show featured the debut of many nationally recognized stars, the shock return of PWA’s resident monster and a title match that will go down in history as one of the best matches ever to grace the South West.

The hype surrounding ‘Heat Wave’ was like no local wrestling show before, so PWA and its roster had a lot of pressure to deliver a show that could live up to the hype. The show kicked off with an ultra physical 6-man contest with Baine and his mystery partners (who turned out to be well known tag team of The Renegades) coming up short against the Bristol Boys and local favourite John Harding.

There was a lot on the line in the second contest of the night as the villainous Jason King was fighting for a PWA contract. Nobody knew who his opponent was going to be but when the music hit we knew it could only be one man and that man was the former director of PWA – Krieger. Krieger in his role as Director had to deal with many issues from Jason King, so he relinquished his role of Director in exchange for a chance to get his hands on his nemesis. After putting Jason King firmly in his place with a vicious beat down, Krieger fell victim once again to King’s dirty tactics as King had a surprise hidden under the ring as a wrestler now known as Adam Flint would come out to cost Krieger the match and help King get the win.

Before the interval we saw the debut of Chuck Cyrus in PWA. Chuck who had wrestled on TV before, tagged with Max Alexander to take on the team of the UK Dominator and ‘The Professional’ Joshua Knott. This match was one of the most entertaining of the night with lots of comical moments, although when it got serious the underhanded tactics of UK Dominator and Josh Knott helped secure themselves the victory.

In his second match back in PWA, Dick Riley faced the returning JD Knight who had been missing in PWA as of late due to injury. Their bout was fantastic and could have headlined many other shows, both of them showed why PWA were so happy to have both of them back and although Riley came out with the win, both will be knocking on the door of a title match very soon with more performances like that.

The theme of returning stars continued as the night went on with the penultimate match pitting the returning Chris Andrews against new PWA signing Kelly Sixx, who has built up a reputation as an emerging star of the business over the last year. The experienced Chris Andrews lived up to his name of the ‘Power House’ and it looked like he was going to pick up a victory on his return but he was derailed by Joshua Knott coming out to help Sixx secure the win. I don’t know what these two are up to but hopefully we will get some explanation at the next show in September.

After a stellar night of action the bar had been set high for the title match but Tyler Hawke in his first title defence did not disappoint. There isn’t a fiercer and more challenging competitor than you can ever have for the title than the ‘English Lion’ Eddie Ryan, so to have to face him in his first defence was a stiff test for Tyler. Ryan and Hawke both being overwhelming fan favourites split the crowd from the start with fans chanting for both stars non-stop. The drama, the athleticism, the moves were all top notch as both men gave their all for PWA’s highest honour ,but in a match which asked for everything from both competitors, Hawke emerged victorious and hung on to the belt. Although Ryan came up on the losing end it was a match that was so tight it could have gone either way. All we know now is that the ‘English Lion’ will be hungrier than ever to win his third PWA title.

People have been raving about the show online and now many are already counting down the days until the next show ‘September Slam’ on September 25th at the Plymouth School of Creative Arts. After going to war with each other on Sunday, PWA management have announced that the main event for ‘September Slam’ will be staunch fan favourites Eddie Ryan and Tyler Hawke teaming up with Dick Riley to go against the team of “The Bull” Robin Lekime, “The Professional” Joshua Knott and Kelly Sixx, in a 6-man tag team match of epic proportions. This match could have huge ramifications in regards to who the next challenger is for the Heavyweight Title and the only way you will find out first is by seeing it live.
