Did you know? – Roulette edition
There’s a game that’s spun through many centuries and evolved as the world has changed. It’s become accessible to the masses who log on each day to spin the icon wheel, or prefer to see the wheel spin in front of their eyes within a brick-and-mortar casino establishment:
We are of course talking about the game deemed as a casino classic – Roulette.
Due to its popularity, many players jump straight into playing the game, whether that be through an online casino or by visiting a physical casino establishment, without knowing anything about the game's history or unearthing any facts about it.
However, that’s all about to change, as we’ve gathered some facts about Roulette that you may or may not know. You could save what you find out for a pub quiz, or for when you’re standing around a physical Roulette table with friends, to sound more like a pro than you already are!
So, if you’re ready, did you know…
The Devil’s game
Did you know... Roulette is referred to as the devil’s game, due to all the numbers found within the wheel, whether it be the European or American variation, adding up to a total of 666.
It’s believed in many cultures, that the number, 666, is the mark of the devil, hence why Roulette has been given this nickname in some places around the world.
Opposites
Did you know… the wheel and ball spin opposite ways to each other. That means, if the dealer, otherwise known as a croupier, spins the Roulette wheel clockwise, they’ll need to spin the ball in an anti-clockwise direction.
The same goes for if and when a dealer spins the wheel anti-clockwise, the ball will need to be entered into play in a clockwise direction.
Some casinos often require their croupiers to change up the rotation each game, so if the previous game saw the Roulette wheel spin clockwise, the next game played will see the wheel spun anti-clockwise.
50/50
Did you know… despite there being bet types called even money, that focus on either the colour of the pocketed compartment of the wheel, or whether the winning number will be odd or even or high or low – it isn’t a 50/50, straight down the middle, even money, 50% chance that you could predict correctly.
In actual fact, if playing on a European wheel, the chances are 48.6% of being successful when placing an even money bet. For an American wheel, the chances decrease to 47.4%. This is due to the fact that both wheels contain a single zero (0) and the American also contains a double zero (00) within its wheel.
The Don’ts of Roulette
Did you know… it’s considered rude to bring any form of food or drink to a physical Roulette table.
Not only this, but if you’re thinking of throwing down your betting chips and saying “I’m all in”, throwing your chips down onto the table is also considered rude.
Taking a handbag with you, or a small bag to put your belongings in when visiting a casino? It’s a rule at the Roulette table to not place your bag on the edge of the table, or near the table top, as you could see yourself being accused of trying to steal.
