Final flourish for Women in Art exhibition

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery's popular Women in Art exhibition is heading into its final month and will feature a recent and highly prestigious acquisition during its last few weeks.

‘To Tell Them Where It’s Got To’ by Lynette Yiadom-Boakye was purchased by the Museum in late 2013 thanks to a grant from the Contemporary Art Society and the support of London-based Corvi-Mora Gallery.

The painting has most recently been on display at prestigious international art exhibition, the Venice Biennale. It's now been returned to the UK and will be on display at the Museum from Tuesday 4 March to Saturday 12 April.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a painter, poet and writer who was born in London in 1977 and studied at the Royal Academy, Falmouth College of Art and Central St Martins School of Art and Design, London. She has exhibited internationally and was one of last year's Turner Prize nominees.

"Acquiring Lynette's painting continues a great Turner Prize tradition here at the City Museum and Art Gallery as many of our recent exhibitions have included works by winners and nominees," said Alison Cooper, Curator - Decorative Art.

"The 'Women in Art' exhibition has been a long-running show and we have regularly updated it by rotating works from our permanent art collection. Over the last couple of years it's given us a great opportunity to highlight the role of women as subjects and artists from Renaissance times right through to the present day, and show a range of paintings, portraits, ceramics and enamels that are not normally on public display."

The exhibition will remain open until Saturday 12 April.

Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. Admission is free. On certain days, the gallery may be in use for events and access may be restricted.
