Mama Mia! Douze points! Eurovision fun on the Plymouth big screen
It’s that time of year again! Weird and wonderful pop acts from across the continent are preparing to battle it out in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 18 May – and you can watch it all on the Plymouth big screen.
Plymouth City Council is following this year’s Lord Mayor’s Day celebrations with a big Eurovision party on the Armada Way piazza, where people can cheer on Bonnie Tyler as she flies the flag for the UK with ‘Believe in Me’.
Entertainment will start at 4.30pm with a screening of the film ‘Mamma Mia’, followed by an hour-long set from top local band Joker at 6.30pm. Live Eurovision coverage from Malmo in Sweden will start at 8pm.
If you fancy a bite to eat there will be food available from 4pm and a bar will open at 5.30pm. Seating will be provided and UK hats and flags will be on sale.
Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “Eurovision is such a popular event and this gives fans a chance to celebrate it together in a fun, open-air environment. It’s all part of our commitment to showing major events on the screen and bringing the city centre to life during the summer months. We hope lots of people will go along and enjoy the party atmosphere.”
Saturday’s event, being organised in partnership with Destination Plymouth, the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership and the Plymouth City Centre Company, will be the first in a series of ‘Alive After Five’ screenings this year, including the Royal Opera, Last Night of the Proms, Wimbledon and more.
