Woods and waves activities for half term

Families wanting fresh air and fun have got their pick of events in the city from the seashore to woodlands this half term.

Plymouth’s Stepping Stones to Nature team have put on a packed programme of activities designed to get Plymouth people out and about.

Four organisations dedicated to helping people learn about nature, as well as feel happier, healthier and more connected with the environment, are working with the Council to put on the events.

Cabinet Member for the Environment Councillor Brian Vincent said: “Within our city we are lucky enough to have an incredible environment and organisations that are passionate about nature and more than happy to share their enthusiasm.

“We hope families will enjoy getting out of their usual routines, take time away from the computer and TV and spend time together. We’ve arranged lots of great activities for the whole family to enjoy.”

Plymouth Woodland Project is a citizen science project that aims to inspire adults as well as children to learn new skills and knowledge about wildlife and ecology of our many woods. They will be out and about on
• Saturday 24 May – Radford Woods, 10am to 1pm. Email alison.smith@plymouth.ac.uk, call 07954 683869 or just turn up on the day. Meet at 10am in the Radford Woods bird hide, off White Lady Road.

• Tuesday 27 May – Ham Woods, 10am to 1pm. Meet at 10am by Ham House, at the top of Tewkesbury close near the entrance to the woods

Beach Rangers will guide children and adults around the amazing marine world lapping the edge of the city. Free activities they will be putting on include beach cleans, crabbing, artwork, fishing, mud sampling, foraging and fish dissections. There’s no need to book, just turn up on the day.

• Thursday 29 May – Kinterbury Creek, 11am to 3pm.

The ‘Wild About Woods!’ folk promise to get a bit ‘Bear Grylls’ with free family activities to explore nature through art, bushcraft, games and den building.
• Wednesday 28 May Woodland Wood, 11am to 2pm. Meet by at woods entrance, just off Ringmore Way, West Park.
• Thursday 29 May Southway Valley, 11am to 2pm. Meet at the entrance at Pendeen Crescent by the miniature railway.

Plymouth’s Step into Nature scheme is part of a national ‘Walking for Health' campaign which aims to get adults to take up moderate physical activity.

Jointly run by the Council and Plymouth Community Health Care, they will be offering a gentle walk on
