To mark International Clinical Trials Day on Monday 20 May, Derriford Hospital staff from the Research and Development Team will be holding a stand outside the restaurant on level 7 between 10am and 4pm.

Staff will be available to offer advice and inform staff, visitors and patients about the clinical trials and research across the Trust, the benefits to patients and how to get involved in research. There will also be a demonstration of research using iPads that is taking place.

Claire West, Research Nurse Specialist explains: “Within the hospital clinical trials and research often goes unnoticed and this is a great opportunity for us to let everybody know about the clinical research that we are involved with.

“The benefits of clinical research can be invaluable to staff and patients but it is important to note that although some clinical trials can be obtrusive, this is not always the case.”

International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated to commemorate Dr James Lind, who carried out the first clinical trial on 12 men serving on HMS Salisbury, to see whether additions of cider, seawater, a mixture of garlic, mustard and horseradish or oranges and lemons, to the basic seaman’s diet could cure scurvy. The results marked Lind as a pioneer of naval hygiene and led to scurvy almost disappearing from the Royal Navy.
