Graduate games development firm releases first title
So Good Studios, a local start-up company run by three Plymouth University graduates, released its first game, ‘Tap Tournament’, for iOS, Android and Amazon devices.
The So Good Studios team left University and began work in June, 2015 when, three days after their final exam, the team moved into the ‘Formation Zone’, Plymouth University’s award-winning business incubator. Since then, So Good Studios have worked on their own game titles, as well as securing and delivering development work for outside clients.
The game itself, titled ‘Tap Tournament’, is a tablet and mobile game for up to four players, built with an emphasis on playability for players of all ages and skill levels. The company hopes the game will encourage people who don’t normally play games to give it a try, with its shallow difficulty curve and emphasis on playing with multiple people allowing any group of players to switch on and compete.
The three founding members of the company, Jack Gill, Sam Hession and Will Hosgood, met at Plymouth University in 2012. Soon after, they began developing game projects as a team, working under the name So Good Studios, a faux company that would eventually progress into a fully-fledged entity, and a full time occupation for the team.
Since their start, the team have been working hard to become successful members of the Plymouth game/software development community, and, using their ties to the University, encourage other students to go into business for themselves.
Jack Gill, So Good Studios Managing Director said: “There’s a great, burgeoning community of developers, particularly game developers, in the area, and we’re proud to be a part of it. The more we can do to raise Plymouth’s profile as a hub for this kind of work, and to encourage talented students to stay, the better.”
Though the game has been released, the company’s work is far from over. In the next few weeks they will be working to promote the game and looking over the responses from the public, as well as paying close attention to data collected based on its release.
