Ken Howick, aged 52 from Bickington, Devon, will be completing his landmark 100th ever half marathon at Plymouth’s Half Marathon on Sunday 19th April 2015, in memory of his mother June Allin, for Target Ovarian Cancer.

Ken, who took part in his first half marathon back in 1990, said: “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, and sadly again in 2009. In September 2013 she also received the devastating news that she was also suffering from ovarian cancer. Despite two courses of chemotherapy, my brave mother passed away on 26th May 2014, exactly two months before her 77th Birthday.

“She was a great support when it came to my running events, and after I hit the 75 mark we often talked about if I could keep going to complete my 100th race. For me, it’s a huge achievement, and I always wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. After my mother passed away, it seemed only fitting that I should carry on and aim to achieve my goal of 100 half marathons in her memory.

“I have raced Plymouth’s Half Marathon in the past, but not for a few years, so I’m really looking forward to returning to the streets of Plymouth for this local event! I had initially hoped to raise £200 for Target Ovarian Cancer, but to date the number is already up to £750! The support for my challenge has been overwhelming, and I hope I can do my mother proud on the day!”

Now heading into its 22nd year, Plymouth’s Half Marathon is known for its spectacular scenery, fantastic spectator support and friendly atmosphere. The race will start in style on The Hoe, before taking in a stunning and varied course that boasts coastal views, the charming Barbican harbour, and even the beautiful National Trust grounds of Saltram Park. The 13.1 mile journey will then bring you back to The Hoe, where you can expect thousands of supporters waiting to cheer you across the finish line!
