Plymouth Royal Mail '300 Club' donates £1,000 to help those affected by Asbestos Cancer Mesothelioma

On 28 November 2016, the Plymouth Royal Mail Community Action Team, known as The 300 Club, donated a fantastic £9000 to various local charities and organisations.

The region's Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialist Christine Jones was kindly presented with a cheque totalling £1000 for the South West Mesothelioma Support Group by BBC Devon Radio presenter David Fitzgerald and British Olympic diver Tonia Couch.

Mesothelioma is a terminal cancer which most commonly affects the lining of the lungs and is caused by the inhalation of disturbed asbestos fibres. Asbestos is often called the ‘hidden killer’ as the dust can be too small to see and yet has the potential to kill.

Historically Plymouth has been a hot spot for mesothelioma with many cases emerging among former Devonport Dockyard workers and labourers.

The South West Mesothelioma Support Group was established in 2011 to provide peer and professional support for those affected by mesothelioma. Members also spread awareness throughout the region regarding the disease and the ongoing dangers of asbestos.

Christine said; 'We would like to extend our sincere thanks to members of The 300 Club for their very generous donation. It will go a long way in helping support those who have been affected by mesothelioma which is so prevalent in Plymouth and the South West.'
