A Devon born writer, who grew up and went to school in the county, has written a book.

Linda Jones, who was born in Plymouth in 1942, has written The Bird Rules – OK!, a collection of poetry and short stories, published by Tim Saunders Publications.

“My start in life was surrounded by bombed houses,” recalls Linda. “Dad was a Naval man. He had served a long term of duty on HMS Repulse. Luckily, he was transferred to HMS Newcastle just prior to the sinking of Repulse in the Far East. However, Newcastle's tour of duty was for three years. Consequently, I never met Dad until I was three.

“By then I lived in Furneaux Road, together with Mum, Grandma, Wimpy the Cat, Topsy and Turvy, two Keeshonds, Dawn the Alsatian (as they were then known) in one of the houses left standing in that area. Dad retired from the Navy and joined the Civil Service. In 1947 my brother Gregory was born. The house by now was bursting at the seams so Dad had a brand new bungalow built for us at Glenholt on the very outskirts of Plymouth. Consequently, our animal population grew! More dogs, cats, geese, goats, chickens and even a baby owl, rescued by me and my dog Candy. We became a haven for neighbour's children and visiting relatives. The field behind the house was guarded by two huge oak trees and the woods - just across the road - a child's paradise and adventure playground. A time of innocence! However, I remember landing my brother, relatives and friends in trouble from time to time, paying the penalty of not being allowed out to play.”

The Bird Rules – OK! is available in ebook, paperback and hardback from all good bookshops and online.
