People now have the opportunity to celebrate the life of a family pet by purchasing a 5-year memorial plaque at one of the new community orchards. For £210 people can have a memorial plaque on a granite plinth set within one of the newly planted orchards and meadows.

The new orchards at Central Park, Plympton Pathfields and Honicknowle Green will offer open green spaces for people to enjoy, as well as free fruit to pick. They will also feature a beautiful wildflower meadow within the orchard.

These three sites were planted as part of Plymouth City Council’s Green Gifts programme, and marks an exciting partnership between Plymouth City Council and Buglife.

Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for Streetscene said: “Green gifts has been a huge success in Plymouth since it was launched. One of the most popular choices is to buy a memorial bench to remember a loved one. We know how important people’s pets are to them so we wanted to offer people a dedicated space to remember them. Not only are you helping to create a fantastic community orchard, you are also contributing to providing a beautiful wildflower meadow within the orchard.”

The Green Gifts scheme has been running in Plymouth since 2013 and gives people the chance to have trees or flowers planted in the city to mark important events such as an anniversary, a wedding or to commemorate a special person.

People can sponsor the planting of a tree as a celebration, a living memorial, to replace a lost street tree or to give a ‘green gift’.

A minimum donation for a ‘Silver Package’ of a personally-owned tree is £340. This includes a replacement tree if it fails within the first three years. There is also a ‘Gold Package’ for a donation of £380, should the tree die during the first five years of planting we will replace it.

A number of roundabout and roadside sites are also available for sponsorship to help businesses and groups promote themselves in a cost-effective way. This would cost between £700 to £1,500 depending on the location, but the cost would include the manufacture and installation of a sign at the location for a year.
