‘Can Ewe Knit It?’ celebrates Shaun’s 30 years
Shaun the Sheep, the beloved stop-motion character created by Aardman, is celebrating 30 years since his debut in Wallace & Gromit: A Close Shave (1995). To mark this milestone, Aardman has launched a global crafting campaign called ‘Can Ewe Knit It?’, inviting fans and crafters worldwide to knit or crochet Shaun-inspired woollen blanket squares.
Running until October 2025, the initiative is a collaboration between Aardman, British Wool, Campaign for Wool, and Craft Forward. Participants can download free pattern designs or create unique squares inspired by Shaun’s iconic fleecy look. All squares, measuring 20 x 20 cm, will be collected and assembled into blankets at a public event on 28th October 2025 at The Mills Fabrica in Kings Cross, London.
The finished blankets will be donated to unhoused people in London through Craft Forward’s ‘Blankets for London’ project, which has already produced over 470 handmade blankets to support vulnerable communities. The campaign also serves as the first step in a wider “Blankets for the World” initiative aimed at distributing warmth globally.
Aardman emphasizes the importance of using 100% British Wool for the project, with materials generously donated by West Yorkshire Spinners. This not only celebrates Shaun’s sheep heritage but also supports UK sheep farmers, who British Wool has backed for 75 years.
Fans of all skill levels are encouraged to take part and share their creations online with the hashtag #CanEweKnitIt and tag @aardmananimations.
Over three decades, Shaun the Sheep has become a cultural icon, winning multiple awards including BAFTAs and an Emmy. Despite his global fame, Shaun’s model remains a small 17cm figure crafted with incredible detail by Aardman’s expert team.
For those wanting to join the campaign, patterns can be downloaded at https://aard.mn/CanEweKnitIt, with completed squares to be posted by 30th September 2025 to:
