80mph winds expected as Devon prepares for another battering
The South West is preparing for another battering with strong winds and rain forecast for the weekend.
The Met Office have issued a yellow warning for rain and an amber wind alert with gusts of up to 80mph expected, valid until 6am on Sunday.
Surf forecasters have predicted wave heights of 35ft, particularly around the southern coastline of Devon and Cornwall, presenting serious danger to anyone standing or in a vehicle near to coastal promenades and beaches.
Plymouth City Council's Civil Protection Unit and police community support officers spent Friday afternoon going door-to-door around the Hoe to provide advice and support to residents ahead of the next spell of bad weather.
Police have opened a multi-agency command centre in Plymouth which will remain open during Saturday.
Residents are advised to:
- Stay away from seafronts and quays, and resist the urge to sightsee. Waves are likely to be carrying rocks and other debris, do not put yourself at risk.
- Take care if walking on beaches and around cliffs in the bad weather. The speed and force of large waves can easily take you by surprise.
- Take extra care on the roads. Be aware of surface water, fallen trees and debris and do not attempt to drive through flood water.
- Check with vulnerable neighbours in case they need help during the next few days.
- Even if you normally listen to other stations, know how to tune into your local radio station (Plymouth Radio 106.7 FM and BBC Devon 95.7) for weather updates and public safety information in an emergency.
People are asked to report incidents of flooding on Plymouth roads by email to: plymouth.watchman@amey.co.uk or calling 01752 668000. In an emergency call 999.
