Avid fans of ‘Cheese Lover’s Day’ at Gittisham Hill House
As Cheese Lover’s Day is celebrated on 20th January every year, the cheese-loving Residents at Gittisham Hill House care home in Honiton, Devon, simply had to mark the day somehow, so Colleagues organised a tasting session.
To start the afternoon off, a discussion group was held with Residents and Colleagues where they talked about all the different types of cheeses and where exactly the cheese comes from.
Astonishingly, during a brainstorm activity, the Residents were able to list more than twenty varieties of cheese and many even suggested recipes on what to do with it, much to the delight of Colleagues.
Administrator Ruth Paton and Carer Toby Pym enjoyed hosting the session with Residents then trying out and guessing the different types of cheeses (see pictured).
Everyone enjoyed tasting all the cheese, especially the Stilton. Following the success of this event, the residents have requested to celebrate Cheese Lover’s Day every year.
Barbara Harrup, who lives at Gittisham Hill House, said, “It was lovely to have so many different types of cheese to try!”
Ruth Paton, Home Administrator at Gittisham Hill House, commented, “The staff enjoyed tasting the different cheeses as much as the Residents. Residents loved the story of the ‘cheese rolling down the hill’ contest that takes place nearby. But we also talked about Wallace and Gromit and their love of wensleydale cheese. Much to everyone’s amusement. What an afternoon!”
Julia Heneker, Home Manager at Gittisham Hill House, remarked, “Being a cheese lover myself, I was thrilled when the team suggested we celebrate this national event and the experience proved to be just as I expected. So many of our Residents were keen to try different cheeses and enjoyed a wonderfully sociable afternoon of both cheese and laughter. What more could we all ask for!”
