A free memorial service is being held at East Devon Crematorium to remember all those who have died during the pandemic.

Organised and led by the crematorium staff, it is hoped the event will provide comfort for relatives and friends who have been bereaved during this particularly difficult and distressing time.

The Special Memorial Service at East Devon Crematorium, located between Exeter and Honiton, will take place on Thursday 9 September at 6.30pm. Although space in the chapel will be limited, the service will also be broadcast online and will include a roll call of all those being remembered.

Katherine Ohlsen from East Devon Crematorium said: "During the pandemic, we have seen immeasurable heartache - families not being able to support loved ones during their final hours or even attend funerals due to travel restrictions. We have also witnessed the added anguish caused by social distancing regulations, with constraints placed on comforting gestures such as hugging and hand-holding.

"We hope this evening of reflection will help people in the process of grieving and healing, whilst addressing the desolate isolation felt by many during lockdown."

Light refreshments will be served after the service when mourners will have the opportunity to share experiences together and meet crematorium colleagues. A counsellor will also be on hand from ‘Bereavement Care', a free service linked with the crematorium.
