Last month saw the grand opening of the new theatre training room in Main Theatres at Derriford Hospital.

After a £50,000 education grant from Karl Storz UK, state of the art audio-visual equipment has been installed in the new room, allowing healthcare professionals to receive a more hands-on interactive experience than ever before.

Mark Coleman, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Derriford Hospital, said: “On behalf of the Trust and all of its healthcare workers, I am delighted to announce the opening of the new theatre training room.

“This is a fantastic training facility for all operating theatre professionals. It allows live two way audio-visual access for up to 25 delegates to the operating theatre. The live surgery can be transmitted globally if required. We are very grateful to Karl Storz for the educational grant of £50,000 to equip this cutting edge facility.”

The training room puts Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust at the leading edge of medical training for the following types of educational events:

•           Live operating links for training surgeons, anaesthetists and theatre staff

•           Simulation training

•           Team training

•           Safety training (human factors)
