Devon & Cornwall Police plead motorists to take more care on the roads following a string of serious collisions
A spate of collisions involving pedestrians in Plymouth is causing concern for officers in Devon & Cornwall
Between Sunday 7 January and Wednesday 11 January 2024, Devon & Cornwall Police have attended three collisions involving pedestrians. As a result, one pedestrian sadly lost their life, and two have suffered life-changing injuries and remain being treated at a local Hospital.
Chief Inspector Simon Jenkinson, of the Roads Policing Team at Devon & Cornwall Police, said: “Within the last week, officers have attended three serious collisions involving pedestrians in Plymouth.
“Sadly, one of these collisions has resulted in a tragic loss of life which, as you can imagine, has been devastating for the family and friends of the person involved. These people are being supported by specialist officers and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.
“The recent collisions in Plymouth have been truly tragic, and we are committed to doing everything we can to prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies.”
Ch/Insp. Jenkinson added, “It’s important to recognise that we all share responsibility for road safety.
“When you are driving, please approach junctions and pedestrian crossings with caution and take extra care to make sure that nobody is crossing the road. Make sure you leave your mobile phone alone, always wear a seatbelt and never drink or take drugs and drive.
“We would also like to urge cyclists and pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing during darker hours and to check carefully for nearby cars before turning off or stepping out to cross the road.
“If we all take extra time to look out for other road users, we may be able to prevent collisions and save lives.”
The five main causes of serious injuries and deaths on roads in Devon and Cornwall are:
- Driving at an excessive speed
- Not wearing a seatbelt
- Driving while using a mobile phone
- Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Careless or inconsiderate driving

Woman killed in collision, Plymouth
A woman in her 50s has died following a collision in Plymouth yesterday, Sunday 7 January.
Police were called at around 6.20pm to reports of a collision involving a Plymouth City Bus and a pedestrian on Western Approach.
The pedestrian was confirmed deceased at the scene. Enquiries remain ongoing to locate next of kin.
A 53-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless / inconsiderate driving. He has since been bailed.
Officers are seeking witnesses to the incident and would especially like to speak with passengers who were on the bus, and to the driver of a Ford Fiesta who may have witnessed the collision.

Appeal after pedestrian seriously injured in collision with Mercedes in Plymouth
Police are appealing for dashcam footage and information after a pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision with a car in Plymouth.
The incident happened in Charles Street, outside Drake Circus, at around 9.25pm on Saturday 6 January.
It involved a grey-coloured Mercedes Coupe and a male pedestrian aged in his 50s.
The pedestrian sustained life-changing injuries and was taken to Derriford Hospital.
Anyone who witnessed the collision, has any information, or in a particular has any relevant dashcam footage, is asked to contact police, quoting log 765 of 6 January 2024.
Serious collision, Plymouth
A man has been seriously injured following a collision in Plymouth.
Officers were called at around 4.45pm on Wednesday 10 January to the A386 Outland Road. It was reported that the collision involved a Seat Leon Cupra and a pedestrian.
The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, sustained serious injuries as a result and was taken to Derriford Hospital where he remains.
A man in his 20s from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He remains in police custody.
