Devon man who has worked at same hotel for 30 years rewarded for long-service
A Devon man who has worked at the same hotel for more than 30 years has won an award in recognition of his hard work and dedication.
Robbie Heathman first joined the 5 AA Red Star Bovey Castle in 1993 and has worked across the hotel’s maintenance team ever since, where he is responsible for everything from painting, decorating, to repair work.
He was recognised by the hotel’s owners, The Eden Hotel Collection, as it held its inaugural ‘A Celebration of Our People’ awards to celebrate outstanding achievements from across the group.
Robbie, who is the second longest-serving employee out of more than 425 staff across the group, was presented with a certificate and a £300 gift voucher to use at more than 900 retailers, restaurants and shops.
The 55-year-old, from Tavistock, said: “I didn’t expect to win an award, so I was really chuffed.
“Thirty-odd years ago I was asked to come to the hotel just to clear out some rubbish in the basement and then they asked if I could do a few other odd maintenance jobs, which of course I could. One thing led to another and I’ve been here ever since!
“I have seen a lot of change over the years with extensions throughout the 2000s to add the spa and pool, and then new lodges being built.
“I love my job. There’s always something different to do so it keeps me on my toes and the staff are brilliant. It is like a family, that’s how I’ve always put it.”
The event was designed to celebrate a number of key elements, including long service, Employees of the Year, staff who have completed qualifications, and a Spirit of Eden award for a member of staff who embodies Eden’s values of ‘heart, team, honest and spirit’.
In total, 15 long-serving staff who have been with Bovey Castle for five years or more were recognised, with the cohort racking up 165 years of service between them.
Bovey Castle’s other award winners included HR Assistant Ellie Shelling, who was unanimously voted Employee of the Year for her dedication and commitment, combined with a sunny disposition.
