Devon Mind and the Chestnut Appeal launch the Plymouth Harbour Runs
Two local charities have partnered to launch the Plymouth Harbour Runs, a pair of new community running challenges. Mental health charity Devon Mind and men’s health charity The Chestnut Appeal are inviting local running enthusiasts to participate in the Plymouth Harbour 10K this October, which is now open for registration. The run is sponsored by Bishop Fleming, an accountancy firm with an office on the run route. A second event, the Plymouth Harbour Half, will take place on a date to be confirmed in 2023.
Offering a unique running experience centred around Plymouth’s famous Sutton Harbour, the Plymouth Harbour 10K provides an opportunity for local people to come together to improve their wellbeing and raise much-needed money and awareness for the two Plymouth-based charities. With the funds donated to the event’s runners, Devon Mind and the Chestnut Appeal plan to develop crossover services to meet the mental health needs of men across Devon living with prostate cancer, testicular cancer, or penile cancer.
Speaking about the excitement of launching the charity’s first ever active challenge event, Devon Mind Marketing & Fundraising Manager Andre Pusey stated: “This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and with the events expertise of our colleagues at the Chestnut Appeal, now is the perfect time to go for it! Lots of people looking to support the fight for mental health across Devon have asked us for an event like this, so we’re really excited to be able to bring them the Plymouth Harbour Runs.”
Chestnut Appeal’s Events & Campaigns Manager David Squires added: “We’re delighted to be teaming up with Devon Mind on this fantastic, unique event. Raising awareness of physical and mental health whilst taking on this 10k challenge is a perfect fit.”
Harriet Reynolds, Tax Executive and Wellbeing Champion at headline sponsor Bishop Fleming, commented: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Plymouth Harbour 10K in October to support Devon Mind and the Chestnut Appeal. As a Plymouth-based business ourselves, we thought it was the perfect event to get involved with to demonstrate our commitment to supporting our communities, especially as the route passes our office on Sutton Harbour.
“The run provides a great fundraising opportunity for both charities and we are looking forward to bringing a team of runners to be a part of this. It is a pleasure to help raise money and awareness for such worthwhile and vital causes, and we look forward to supporting them with this event.”
Registration for the Plymouth Harbour 10K, due to take place on Sunday 16th October 2022, is now open at runplymouthharbour.co.uk. Signups for the Half in 2023 will open later in the year. Everyone who registers and completes the 10K run will be automatically entered into a prize draw, which will take place after the event in October 2022.
About the events
The Plymouth Harbour 10K is a picturesque running experience set to take place on Sunday 16th October 2022. The event starts at Mount Batten, with a 10 km route along the South West Coast Path finishing at Rockets & Rascals on the Barbican. Perfect for beginners looking to set themselves a new challenge or improve their fitness, the 10K costs just £15 to enter, which includes a free ferry ride back to the start point.
The Plymouth Harbour Half is a ‘run-back-home’ challenge designed for more experienced runners looking for something a bit different. Scheduled for spring 2023, the event will start with a coach ride from the Barbican to Yelverton, where participants will be dropped off and challenged to run back to the starting point. The Half takes place primarily on cycle routes on the heart of Dartmoor. Date and entry fee to be announced later in 2022.
