Devon Named the ‘Internet Capital’ of the South West

Data compiled by IT support experts, ramsac, has revealed that Devon has the most internet users of any area in the South West.

Overall, the South West saw 4,238,000 people use the internet in a three month period, which is more than the recorded number of users in Scotland or Wales.

Coming out in the top spot of the South West was Devon, with a huge 598,000 users, followed by Bath with 511,000. Although the most internet users reside in Devon, the town with the highest percentage of the public using the internet was Torbay, with 96.3% of the population using the internet within a three month period.

South West locations with the most internet users:

  1. Devon:  598,000
  2. Bath, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire: 511,000
  3. Gloucestershire:  502,000
  4. Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: 432,000
  5. Somerset: 421,000
  6. Wiltshire: 366,000
  7. City of Bristol: 347,000
  8. Dorset: 326,000
  9. Bournemouth and Poole: 272,000
  10. Plymouth: 206,000

South West locations with the highest percentage of population using the internet:

  1. Torbay: 96.3%
  2. Plymouth:  95.4%
  3. Bath, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire: 95.2%
  4. Somerset: 95.2%
  5. Bournemouth and Poole:     95.2%
  6. Wiltshire: 94.9%
  7. City of Bristol: 94.7%
  8. Gloucestershire: 94.1%
  9. Dorset: 93.1%
  10. Swindon:   91.4%

Looking at the age of internet users around the UK, women were the dominant users of the internet, with 24,758,000 users, compared to 24,283,000 men. However, when broken down by age group, 25 – 34 year old men used the internet the most, with 4,479,000 users. 45 – 54 year old women took second place, with 4,453,000 users. Both men and women aged 75+ used the internet the least, and a combined 2,108,000 men and women in the age group said they had never used the internet.
