Devonport Dockyard submarine worker in fatal accident while on duty

A submarine worker has died in an accident while on duty at Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth.

The emergency services were called shortly before 1pm on Monday 21 October, after they received reports that a man had become trapped on a cherry picker vehicle.

In a statement, operating company Babcock Marine confirmed that the man had died while "carrying out maintenance work on a laid-up submarine".

They said: “Everyone at Babcock is saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts are very much with the family of the person who has lost his life.

“Both our company and Pyeroy are co-operating fully with the Police and Health and Safety Executive, and we can say nothing further while their investigations into the as yet unknown cause of this incident continue.”

The 57-year-old man has not been named. His next of kin have been informed.

A joint investigation by Devon and Cornwall Police, the Health and Safety Executive and MOD has commenced, and HM Coroner has been informed.

The death follows the fatal industrial accident on Friday when a 22-year-old Slovakian worker at the Interfish factory in Cattedown was struck by a falling pallet.
