Drake Circus unveils new summer installations in aid of local community partners
Drake Circus has unveiled two new summer installations for 2024, transforming the centre’s atrium and Old Town Street with a kaleidoscope of colour.
Following the success of last year’s underwater-themed installation, this year’s internal display has been developed in partnership with the centre’s local charity partner, Plymouth Hospitals Charity, and will see billowing cloud lights and illuminated rainbows bring a summer feel to the centre throughout the next few months.
A contactless donation point will be in place from July under the impressive rainbows in the Atrium, with visitors able to donate £2 to the charity’s Derriford Children’s Ward fundraising campaign, aimed at helping all children and young people feel as comfortable as possible in hospital. All money raised will help to fund new equipment or toys for children staying on the Ward, as well as to provide additional support for families.
Drake Circus’ external display draws on similar visual themes with a striking rainbow canopy created from eye-catching umbrellas suspended over the centre’s Old Town Street, whilst a
rainbow vinyl selfie spot is also in place at Drake Circus’ Cornwall Street entrance, giving visitors the perfect summer photo opportunity.
Both the canopy and vinyl rainbow celebrate the centre’s continued support for Plymouth Pride, which will see Drake Circus joining in celebrations as a Local Community Champion later this month (Saturday 22nd June).
To keep visitors entertained throughout the summer holidays, the centre will also be hosting a ‘sustainability quarter’ community event space providing a platform for local performers, artists, and businesses to host a range of interactive workshops and activities for visitors to take part in.
Greg Lumley, centre director at Drake Circus, said: “Our summer installations have become an annual source of excitement for our visitors, who look forward to seeing what new theme will transform Drake Circus each summer. This year, we’ve joined forces with an incredible local charity, and our partnership with Plymouth Hospitals Charity will help to support families in our local community when they need it most.
“This year’s installation is also brighter and more colourful than ever to show how proud we are to be sponsoring Plymouth Pride. We can’t wait to bring a smile to the faces of all our visitors over the coming months!”
The display will be live throughout the summer until early September and visitors are encouraged to share their photos with @DrakeCircus on Facebook and Instagram, using the hashtag.
