Elderly victim of Wembury car accident is burgled while in hospital
Police are hunting for burglars who broke into the home of an elderly woman while she was in hospital.
The 85-year-old victim was taken to hospital on Friday morning after her car overturned on Knighton Road in Wembury.
The Hyundai I10 ended up on its roof and the woman was taken to Derriford Hospital for an overnight stay after suffering minor injuries.
When she returned home the next day she discovered that her home in Wembury Meadow had been broken into and around £3,000 worth of valuables had been taken.
The burglars forced the conservatory doors to get inside the Wembury property some time between 5pm on Friday 24 May and 9.30am the next day.
They stole an iPad2 16GB with a red cover and several items of jewellery including a valuable single string pearl necklace, a diamond engagement ring dating from 1921, plus a man’s gold wedding ring, dating back to 1922.
Police are investigating the burglary and appealing to anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them.
Detective Constable Jon Davison, based at Charles Cross police station, said: “This is obviously a very traumatic time for the elderly victim. We would appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area on the evening of the burglary to contact us. We would particularly like to hear from anyone who may have been offered the jewellery or iPad for sale.
“This is a particularly low crime area and this burglary was an isolated incident, however we would ask residents to be vigilant about security measures at this time to protect their property from opportunist burglars.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting crime reference JI/13/391.
