Events in Plymouth mark Hate Crime Awareness Week
A range of events are taking place in Plymouth to mark Hate Crime Awareness Week (10 – 17 October) and encourage local people to report hate crimes and incidents. Events are being held by organisations from across our local voluntary and statutory sector here in Plymouth.
Hate crimes and incidents are targeted at a person because of hostility, prejudice or discrimination towards that person’s disability, ethnicity, faith, belief or religion, sexual orientation, and transgender identity.
Councillor Philippa Davey, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “Hate Crime Awareness Week is an opportunity to remind people of what hate crimes and incidents are and how they can be reported by people who have experienced or witnessed them.
“We are committed to eliminating discrimination and promoting equality in everything we do and to ensuring we do our part in making Plymouth a safer place for our diverse communities.
“As part of Plymouth’s ambition to be a welcoming city we aim to be as inclusive as possible and so we are actively encouraging people to report any hate crimes and incidents. Everyone should be able to be themselves and to live their lives safely.”
Among the partners supporting Hate Crime Awareness Week is Plymouth Community Homes (PCH).
Sarah French, PCH Area Manager (South) said: “We take all forms of anti-social behaviour very seriously, including hate crimes. We support those who are victims and work with perpetrators to help them change their behaviour, but we also take stronger action when needed. Working with our partner agencies helps us take this action and provide support at every stage of the process.”
Events taking place:
- Saturday 10 October, 10am to 3pm: Launch of Hate Crime Awareness Week at Place de Brest (near Specsavers and Barclays), with stands and entertainment.
- Monday 12 October, 2pm to 4pm: Plymouth Community Homes raising awareness in Lipson and Mount Gould.
- Tuesday 13 October, 1pm to 5pm: Plymouth Community Homes are raising awareness among their residents in Stonehouse.
- Wednesday 14 October: Training of frontline Plymouth City Council staff at 1st Stop in New George Street.
- Thursday 15 October, 1pm to 4pm: Plymouth Community Homes raising awareness of hate crime incidents in Whitleigh Green.
- Training of Housing staff (Plymouth City Council) at Ballard House.
- Friday 16 October: Plymouth People First are hosting an event for people with a learning disability and their carers.
- Saturday 17 October: Pride in Plymouth and Out Youth are hosting a candlelit vigil to remember all those affected by hate crime, at Drake Place (next to Plymouth University).
