Flood alert for Plymouth as heavy rain and strong winds return
The Met Office has warned of the risk of flooding as heavy rain and strong winds - possibly gale force - hit the South West during Sunday night.
A number of areas of Plymouth have already reported flooding, including the A374 Pottery Road in Devonport between the Tamar Wharf junction and the Torpoint Ferry junction. Drivers are being warned to approach with care.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of rain for Plymouth and the South West:
"Rain, heavy at times, is expected to reach southwest England later on Sunday before spreading eastwards to affect the rest of southern England overnight Sunday and into Monday morning. This additional rainfall, following recent wet weather, means that the public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding. Gales may also develop along some coasts."
The Met Office forecast said: "A developing area of low pressure is expected to run quickly eastwards across southern England overnight Sunday into early Monday bringing widespread rain across southern Britain which will be heavy in places. Rainfall accumulations will typically be between 10 and 20 mm and locally around 30 mm. It will also become windy in southern counties, but more particularly along exposed coasts where gales may develop for a time during Sunday evening and the early hours of Monday, giving gusts of 50 to 60 mph."
