Plymouth is about to be overrun by garish pullovers as Drake Circus hosts its annual Christmas Jumper Day – all in aid of local and national charities.

Whether it’s sparkly snowflakes, twinkling trees or bold baubles – it doesn’t matter what they’re decorated with so long as they’re out in force on Saturday December 8.

The event, now entering it’s fifth year, has been gaining popularity, with all funds raised going to the Centre’s four chosen charities – Samaritans, Shelter, BASICS Devon and Plymouth Lifeboats.

And the more outrageous the better, as the Centre’s staff and retailers pay homage to the knitted jumpers we all love to hate.

Drake Circus Centre Director Greg Lumley said: “Our Christmas Jumper Day has gone from strength to strength and it’s great to see our stores and customers getting involved.”

“It’s great fun, and quite a spectacle to behold! But it’s also all in aid of some brilliant and worthwhile causes.”

Last year’s event raised £530, but the team are hoping to smash the record for the fifth year running.

The Christmas jumper was a regular fixture in pop culture during the 80s and 90s and has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, with an estimated £220m spent on them in the run up to Christmas 2017.

Visitors to Drake Circus on December 8 are encouraged to get involved by donning their own tribute to the Christmas jumper craze and donating at one of the many collection points in the Centre.

Drake Circus is Plymouth’s most popular shopping destination with over 70 of the UK’s top brand names and biggest stores in the region under one roof.
