High pass rates in Plymouth on nerve-jangling A level results day
Nervous Plymouth A level students have been discovering their results today, while the university application body UCAS has revealed the highest number of applicant acceptances recorded for A level results day.
Plymouth's sixth forms are reporting strong pass rates as A level students discover their grades and whether they have been accepted on higher education courses around the UK.
Plymouth's diving star Tom Daley confirmed he has received straight As in his subjects. He revealed on Twitter:
"Got my A Level results!! Now officially have an A* in photography, A in Spanish and A in maths :) so happy!!!!"
City College Plymouth confirmed a 95% overall pass rate for its 16-18-year-old students, with a 100% pass rate in 12 subjects including chemistry, environmental studies, law and physics. Its adult learners (19 years and over) achieved a pass rate of 97%.
The College has reported an 11% increase in the number of 16 to 18-year-old students achieving A to C grades at A level.
Principal at City College Plymouth, Phil Davies, said: “I would like to congratulate our A Level students on achieving such great results.
“A number of our students have achieved a fantastic pass rates, making us not only Plymouth’s largest A Level provider, but one of the City’s most successful providers.
“The College offers the largest selection of A levels in the area, and these are all offered under one roof. The staff have challenged the students over the past two years to ensure that our students aspire to do better than they thought possible – and this is reflected in the huge jump in the number of students achieving A to C grades.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the College staff for all their hard work in helping our students achieve these impressive results, and to wish our students all the best with their futures.”
The independent Plymouth College has revealed a 98% pass rate for its A level students this year.
The College reports that one in eight pupils have achieved at least three A grades with more than a quarter securing AAB or better.

UCAS says it has processed all A level results with 385,910 applicants already accepted into a UK university or college, up 31,600 (nine per cent) on results day last year.
UCAS has revealed:
- Some 345,300 applicants have been accepted to their 'firm choice' institution, higher than previous totals on results day, and there have been increases in acceptances across the UK and across all age groups.
- A higher proportion of the 18 year old population have been accepted across the UK than on results day in previous years.
- A further 98,740 applicants are awaiting results or decisions, and 145,730 are free to seek a place in Clearing - both lower totals than for recent years.
Mary Curnock Cook, UCAS Chief Executive, said: "The gateway to higher education swings open for many people today based on these results – congratulations to all of them.
“Demand for higher education has recovered after a dip last year and universities are keen to accept qualified applicants.
“For some that means going through Clearing where there are plenty of high quality vacancies. The UCAS website has all the information you need.”
Applicants can log in to Track on the UCAS website this morning to see if they have been accepted or are eligible for Clearing. Students should also check their email for Confirmation letters.
Formal applications to Clearing courses can be made through UCAS from 17:00. Students who want to consider a Clearing place can start looking at courses with vacancies from early in the morning on results day and they should discuss courses that interest them directly with the universities as soon as possible.
Courses with vacancies are listed on the UCAS and Telegraph websites.
City College Plymouth is running an exams hotline from Thursday 16 August on 01752 305803. Free and impartial advice and guidance will be available from the College’s Student Helpdesk team from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays, with an answer phone service available at weekends.
The College is also holding information, advice and guidance sessions at Kings Road site on Friday 16 August and Friday 23 August between 10.00am and 1.00pm for anyone who would prefer to speak to someone face-to-face.
