Kids plant new hedgerow in Axminster
Nineteen children in Years 1 and 2 at Axminster Community Primary Academy helped Little Green Change plant hedgerow saplings on their front playground on Friday 24th January 2025.
Species planted included Elder, Wayfaring, Hazel and Field Maple, all of which were donated by the Devon Wildlife Trust.
During the session, the children all learnt lots of important information including what a hedgerow is, how to plant the saplings correctly, the types of animals that live in hedgerows, and why it's important that we look after our trees, hedgerows and wildlife.
They are excited about being Little Green Change Plant Protectors, helping to ensure the saplings do not get trampled on and are cared for.
Clare Matheson, Founder and Director at Little Green Change commented, "A huge thank you and well done to all the kids that took part. Their enthusiasm and interest in helping to look after nature is so inspiring, with all of them being keen to get stuck in. The children and I are looking forward to seeing the hedgerow saplings grow over the coming years."
She added, "All of the trees and hedgerows on the grounds of the school have so many benefits not only for wildlife but also to human health, as they help to improve air quality. It's great the school are so keen to add to these and to get the kids involved, as it's an excellent learning opportunity."
