Celebrations have been in full swing at Raleigh Manor Care Home, as one of its residents reaches his centenary in style.

As a WWII veteran, and long-time resident of Budleigh Salterton Sid retold the very special memories he has of his time serving for the British Army. Sid saw service landing shortly after D Day at Arromanches (Gold) Beach in Normandy and also at Arnhem (Operation Market Garden). He was awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the Government of France.

He particularly holds the Salvation Army in very high regard for the very warm welcome and “cup of tea” he received on his return to our shores.

With these stories in mind, the staff at Raleigh Manor organised a surprise guard of honour including the Salvation Army represented by our very own local leader, Andrew Cutler along with other band playing members.

Also present were representatives of the British Army on behalf of Regimental Headquarters Royal Artillery and the 43rd Wessex Division Sid served with. Some of the soldiers had travelled over 2 hours to attend. Sid received a special commemorative card from the King & Queen which was presented to him by WO2 Kerry Roberts.

Major Richard Lupton said “It is a pleasure and a privilege to honour one of the few left from a very important part of British history.”

As Major Lupton read out the birthday message from The Royal Artillery, he ended with the phase “Once a gunner, always a gunner.” One that will no doubt, now become a common utterance at Raleigh Manor.

Deputy Manager, Skye Jones added “We wanted this day to be a truly special one for Sid so being able to involve the groups that mean so much to him in the celebration was emotional and heart-warming.”

“Local charity, Launchpad made an amazing cake depicting the white cliffs of Dover. Local singer, Julia Green provided entertainment including all Sid’s favourite Vera Lynn songs and the Exmouth representative for the Royal British Legion, Darren New attended, holding the official Standard. It was perfect!”
