Major road repair programme follows Council's pothole blitz
This week sees the first phase of a major programme to repair some of the most severely damaged roads in Plymouth.
Plymouth City Council is investing in a major programme of resurfacing, ‘patching’ and ‘micro-asphalting’ over the coming months, in addition to its year-round pothole repairs and road maintenance.
The repair programme, being carried out by the Council’s highways contractor Amey, follows a two-week blitz to permanently repair individual ‘category one’ potholes (those deeper than 40mm) that had been reported by the public.
It is starting with a programme of patching, which is resurfacing on sections of road where multiple potholes have developed and the general surface quality is deteriorating. These works are the first part of the additional £2 million investment the Council has pledged to make in road maintenance every year for the next decade.
Larger-scale resurfacing on whole roads and larger sections of road will begin in July, alongside protective micro-asphalting on other roads at risk of damage.
Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport said: "We have worked hard to make additional resources available for road repairs despite significant cuts to our highways maintenance funding from central Government. The extra £2 million we are investing will be used to repair as many damaged roads as possible between June and November.
“We will keep road users informed month-by-month on which roads are next to be repaired, through the local media and on our website and we ask for patience as Amey undertakes this essential work.”
Amey’s street inspectors have selected and prioritised roads for patching based on which are the most damaged. Patches will range from 140 to 2,143 square metres in size and the work will take place throughout June and July.
Local residents and businesses near the works are being notified in advance by letter. Where road closures are required, diversion routes will be signed and access for residents will be maintained where ever possible.
