New BBC Two show Take a Hike strolls into Devon to kick off series
BBC Two’s new competitive hiking series sets off in Devon. Each week five people go head-to-head to discover the best walks the UK has to offer, celebrating jaw-dropping views, great company and the pure joy of being outdoors. The first week in Devon features Lynmouth, Ilfracombe’s coastal path, Shaldon beach, Dartmoor, and Greenway.
Home to wild moorlands, lush rolling hills, secluded beaches and five keen walkers, all hoping their corner of this picturesque county will help them march off with their prize.
Taking it in turns to lead the walk, the others will rate the quality of the route, picnic, views and entertainment. Come rain or shine, uphill or down dale, will they give ten out of ten or a measly one?
Kicking off the week is bubbly 63-year-old taxi driver Helen, hoping to wow the walkers with a cultural tour of Ilfracombe’s coastal path with a surprise splashy ending.
Next is 29-year-old teaching assistant Julian from Barnstaple, who prefers the company of badgers and trees to people, taking the group on a wild woodland walk up the East Lyn river in Lynmouth to experience the healing power of nature.
Single mum and part-time farmer Rosie, takes the group along Shaldon beach near Teignmouth in South Devon, ending on the scenic cliffs above Labrador Bay. Planning to score big with a taste of farming and country life along the way.
48-year-old local councillor and former Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Chaz plans to lead a winning Devon walk with his Dartmoor hike up beautiful Bellever Tor. Delivering stunning scenery with a side order of a spicy picnic to blow their walking boots off.
On the final day of the Devon walks, 65-year-old B&B owner Colin from Paignton hopes to walk and cook his way to the top. Starting in the grounds of Greenway, the former holiday home of famous crime-writer Agatha Christie, he’ll lead the hikers on a woodland walk, before crossing the river on the ferry to end in historic Dartmouth.
At the end of the week, the winner will walk off with a voucher for outdoor gear, and the coveted “Golden Walking Stick”. So let the challenge commence. It’s time to Take A Hike!
Take A Hike airs on weekdays starting Monday 13th of September on BBC Two at 6:30pm and available on iPlayer.
