Paignton Poet journeys through Abbey’s history
A series of poems by The Paignton Poet, more commonly known as Chaz E. Arnold, are on display at Buckland Abbey near Yelverton until 17 July.
Inspired by the unique spirit of Sir Francis Drake’s former home, the poems are being exhibited throughout the house alongside existing treasures, including a verified Rembrandt self-portrait, a painting believed to be the earliest likeness of Drake and the legendary drum the seafarer took with him when he circumnavigated the world.
Speaking about his poetry, Chaz said: ‘It has been a great pleasure to write a series of poems inspired by Buckland Abbey’s ever changing journey through history; a journey that echoes the path of a nation. The characters of the past have shaped the abbey of today. If you sit and listen carefully, they will tell you their stories.’
Chaz’s poetry is part of a month-long collaboration between the volunteers and staff at Buckland Abbey and artists from Devon Art Pop. Other pieces of work inspired by the ancient estate are also on show, including lino prints by Emma Higgins, acrylic colours by Jill Griffin and paper colleagues by Niki Hills.
For the last year, staff, volunteers and visitors to Buckland Abbey have worked together to produce a ‘spirit of place’ statement for the property. Now complete, this statement will be used to influence how Buckland Abbey looks in the future. This exhibition signals the first of many planned over the next couple of years.
All the pieces exhibited around the house by Devon Art Pop are for sale.
