Pecorama Celebrates 50 Years
Beer, Devon – 16 July 2025 – Pecorama, one of Devon’s most beloved attractions, marked a momentous milestone last week as it celebrated its 50th birthday with a day full of nostalgia, joy, and community spirit.
On Wednesday 16th July, the site welcomed back two original engines from its early days—Thomas JNR and Little Nell—bringing a wave of fond memories to long-time visitors and railway enthusiasts alike. Thomas JNR was part of a special reenactment of the very first train journey on the Beer Heights Light Railway, delighting guests of all ages.
The day held even deeper significance as Richard Awdry, grandson of Rev. Wilbert Awdry, the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, joined the celebrations. Rev. Awdry himself officially opened Pecorama 50 years ago, and Richard’s presence brought the story full circle. During the event, Richard shared a heartfelt message from his father, Christopher Awdry:
“Congratulations Beer Heights Light Railway on your 50th Birthday. We always much enjoyed our visits wandering around the beautiful gardens. We know that the engines have been enjoying themselves for several years since then. We offer our best wishes and smooth running for the next 50 years and more.”
Following the speech, Richard Awdry planted a commemorative tree in Pecorama’s gardens, overlooking the railway—a living tribute to the site's enduring legacy.
Chairman Michael Pritchard also addressed the crowd, reflecting on Pecorama’s journey and its cherished place in the hearts of visitors over the decades. The event was attended by members of the public, including a special visit from Beer Primary School, whose pupils added youthful energy to the day.
Many guests returned after decades, sharing stories and memories, making the celebration not just a birthday, but a reunion of generations.
Pecorama extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined in the festivities and looks forward to many more years of joy, steam, and storytelling.
