Pirate festival returns to Burgh
Burgh Island Hotel will once again open its doors to locals and visitors alike on Thursday 14 August 2025, for the annual Tom Crocker Day – a vibrant community event celebrating the legendary pirate said to haunt the island’s historic Pilchard Inn.
Tom Crocker, once the most feared smuggler in Devon, made the island’s caves his base and met his untimely end at The Pilchard Inn. According to local legend, his ghost still roams Burgh Island, searching for his long-lost treasure. This year’s event honours that legacy with a full day of family-friendly fun, music, food, and a touch of mystery.
Guests can enjoy a treasure hunt across the island, with the winner receiving a complimentary midweek stay at the hotel. There will also be a sandcastle competition, live music from KUDU (2–4pm), and a DJ set by Emma Carter (12–2pm). Additional entertainment includes face painting, puzzles, Burgh Gin tastings, and unique Pilchard Inn merchandise.
Food will be available all day, with a barbecue from 11.30am to 4.30pm, an ice cream hut, and rum tastings provided by LWC Drinks – a nod to Crocker’s rum-loving reputation.
The event will raise funds for The Wave Project, a surf-therapy charity supporting local youth facing mental health challenges.
Hotel owner Giles Fuchs said, “Tom Crocker Day lets us celebrate not just the island’s glamour and fame, but its thrilling pirate past. We invite everyone to join in the adventure.”
The event begins at midday, and everyone is welcome to take part in this unforgettable celebration on Devon’s most iconic island.
