Planning permission sought for new ‘Clyst Meadows’ in East Devon
East Devon District Council (EDDC) has secured a 25 acre/10ha site at Broadclyst Station to provide a new area of open space for local residents and visitors.
Forming part of the Clyst Valley Regional Park, the new ‘Clyst Meadows’ could provide a nature-rich and dog-friendly space to give people a wider choice of places to visit in the area.
EDDC has submitted a planning application for the site’s change of use from agricultural land to public open space. You can read and respond to the planning application reference 24/2049/MFUL, before 8 November 2024.
Cllr Geoff Jung, East Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Coast, Countryside and Environment, said: "Following a public consultation last year, we have listened to feedback about the design of the new public space and the location of the car park, which is reflected in the planning application.
"As a result, we hope Clyst Meadows will become a welcoming open space for all, with wild countryside and attractive walks, as well as providing a range of habitats including damp meadows, hedges, scrubby woodland and veteran oak trees which will be home to nesting birds, bats and a range of insects including beautiful Wasp Spiders.
"We would also deliver the first part of a new shared walking and cycle trail between Station Road and Mosshayne Lane, as part of a new Cranbrook to Exeter cycleway.
"If the application is approved our Countryside Team will manage the site. They will work with Broadclyst Parish Council and the community to provide a range of educational activities and events. There will be opportunities for local people to volunteer to help improve the value of the site for wildlife."
