Plans submitted to light up Charles Church
A planning application for listed building consent to install LED lighting in and around one of Plymouth's most historic monuments has now been submitted.
Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet Member for Finance and Assets said: “Just a week after the plans for Smeaton’s Tower we now have the detailed plans for Charles Church and I’m really pleased we have been able to get this scheme to such an important stage.
“We raised the plans with English Heritage last week and hope to explain the very detailed proposals to an officer in person in the next few weeks.
“Charles Church is world-famous monument to the devastation of the city and loss of life in the second world war. The people of Plymouth expressed over whelming support to our proposals to improve the lighting, when we trialed illuminations in November last year.”
A number of technical trials have been carried out to check the effect of the lamps as well as the intensity and colour range of the lights. Extremely careful consideration has to be being given to the exact location of the lamps, how they will fixed in place and where cables will be taken to supply the lamps, this is to respect the importance of this Grade one Listed monument.
Lights will be on every evening as they are at present but will have a much more intense cool white illumination respecting the nature sentiment of the memorial
The company carrying out the lighting trials and designing proposals is LITE ltd supported by Hydrock and Hyde Park Electricals.
This application is the second of four that will be made later in the spring as, Mayflower Steps and Mount Batten Fort are all being prepared.
