Plymouth appoints its first Lord Mayor's police cadet

Aptly-named Lauren Peel has been named as the first Lord Mayor's police cadet. Laura, who is 14-years-old, has been appointed to the post, which is similar to the High Sheriff's cadet role.

Lauren joined Plymouth East Community Police Cadets in 2011 and was recognised by staff as best new recruit in 2012 at her passing out parade and awards ceremony in Harewood House, Plympton.

Last year she was runner-up in the competition to become the High Sheriff Cadet, despite stiff competition from 400 other cadets.

Lord Mayor Vivien Pengelly said: "She was so impressive and had done so well, I thought it was high time we had a cadet our own.

"We work closely with the police on many things and as well as getting a feel for civic life, I'm sure she will keep me on the straight and narrow!"

As a cadet, Lauren attends Plympton Police Station regularly and supports community events such as the Lamb Feast, Colebrook Carnival and the May Fair in Plympton and similar events in Plymstock, offering crime prevention information and engaging with the public.

The cadets also carry out crime prevention initiatives including speed watch, property marking and offering crime prevention information to drivers.

The Lord Mayor added: "This is a voluntary role which will have to fit in around school – but she will have an incredible year and get to meet people from all walks of life. It will be invaluable for gaining experience, building confidence and she will make an incredible ambassador for young people in the city."

Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Elaine Hesketh added: "We are delighted the Plymouth police cadets will be represented at so many events. It helps raise the profile of the cadets as well as give Lauren a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
