Plymouth bids to transform city centre and waterfront cycling links

Plymouth is bidding for Government funding to provide improved cycling and walking links through the city centre and along its spectacular waterfront.

As one of the cities applying for a ‘City Deal’, Plymouth has been given the opportunity to bid for a share of up to £30 million being made available through the Department for Transport’s Cycle City Ambition Grant. The grant scheme aims to encourage more cycling by making it easier and safer, as well as promoting its economic, environmental and health benefits.

Plymouth City Council is bidding for nearly £5 million to provide an improved route between the train station and the waterfront, as well as enhancements to the coastal link between the Barbican and Laira Rail Bridge. Its ‘Ocean City Cycle Ambition bid’ also looks to provide an off-road cycle path from Laira Rail Bridge through to Morley Park using the route of former railway line and enhance the link to Saltram Park along the Ride.

The proposal would enhance part of the South West Coast Path, which is also part of the National Cycle Network route NCN 27. It would deliver a safer, more enjoyable route for walkers and cyclists, linking to the planned cycle hire hubs and route between the Barbican and Royal William Yard being delivered as part of the Coastal Communities Fund.

By providing an improved walking and cycling link between the station, city centre and waterfront and eastwards along Cattewater’s coastal route, the scheme would deliver five kilometres of the city’s Strategic Cycle Network. It would also demonstrate Plymouth’s long-term commitment to transforming facilities for cyclists and walkers and promoting active travel.

Councillor Mark Coker, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “The Ocean City Cycle Ambition bid is really exciting for Plymouth and, if successful, would make a big difference to local residents and visitors travelling in Plymouth. Over the last three years we’ve secured around £6.5 million in funding for walking and cycling improvements and we want to continue this momentum, promoting cycling and walking as a safe and attractive travel option and a key part of the city’s transport network.”
