Plymouth Respect Festival

The Plymouth Respect Festival is designed to promote respect and celebrate diversity across all areas of the community. The festival organised by the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council and hosted by Plymouth University in 2013.
Since its launch 16 years ago, the festival has traditionally taken place every October, although it took a break in 2012. In previous years, the festival has included parades in the city centre, live music, dancing and theatrical events, play activities, world food, information stands and many showcased events.
The plan is for that to continue at suitable venues on the University campus and the programme will be confirmed in due course.

Open Day at Greenbank
Greenbank Fire Station, 10am-4pm Saturday
The day offers a variety of demonstrations and displays for all the family to enjoy. Lots to see and do – activities to include:
Kids water shoot in fire costume

Community fire safety advice
Face painting
All proceeds from the event will be divided between ‘Hugs for Henry’ and ‘The Fire Fighter’s Charity’.

The National Theatre’s award-winning production of War Horse begins a ten month, nine-venue tour of the UK and Ireland on 27 September 2013.
A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, War Horse features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing and galloping horses to life on stage. The puppetry directors are Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler, with video design by 59 Productions Ltd, song-making by John Tams, music by Adrian Sutton and sound by Christopher Shutt.

Standup comedy: Benny Boot

Benny Boot has been performing on the UK stand-up comedy circuit for 6 years. He is considered by many comedians as a wonderful stand-up artist to watch. Boot delivers his jokes in a unique style on a variety of strange topics. His engaging persona and material keeps the laughter rolling through the entire show and is guaranteed to bring any audience undone. 'He's got a keen instinct for the joke, an imaginative turn of phrase and an ability to find an offbeat angle to whatever he chooses to talk about' (Chortle).

Bob and Roberta Smith
Plymouth Arts Centre, from10am Saturday
Bob and Roberta Smith is recognised for his trademark, text-based paintings. These colourful signs are hand painted onto scraps of wood and roughly nailed together. The shapes and misshapes of letters are as important as the message they spell out. These fields of colour ask questions, make statements and instigate debate.
Many works take the form of succinct witty slogans whilst others, such as the Browne Report and Letter to Michael Gove, are longer diatribes that expose a frustration with political decision-making. The messages almost always advocate for creativity, culture and freedom.
These paintings use the visual language of folk and punk; the use of drop shadow text and a mixture of different fonts and letter sizes evoke the aesthetics of protest and are reminiscent of makeshift public notices and temporary shop signs from an era before the computer.
Exhibitions at Plymouth Arts Centre are free to browse.

Your New Favourite Band is a five piece group with a broad sound armed with multiple vocalists, keyboards, twin guitars, a tight rhythm section plus an imaginative and wide ranging set. They also make a point of sidestepping some of the tired classics which have been played to death, often by opting for another great track by the same band instead.

Ryan Keen and Gavin James

Ryan Keen is an English singer-songwriter from South Devon. He picked up his first guitar on his 8th birthday and has never looked back. He combines emotionally driven lyrics, warm vocals and a rhythmic percussive style of guitar.
Having spent much of the last three years playing residencies on Dublin's thriving singer-songwriter circuit, Gavin James is now sharing his prodigious talent with the rest of the world. His debut EP entered the Irish iTunes album charts at Number One, after which he coolly went on to pick up the Choice Meteor Award in 2013 (the Irish Mercury Prize) for Song Of The Year with 'Say Hello'. On his 21st Birthday, Gavin signed his record deal and joined Believe Recordings growing roster, which includes fellow Irish singer/songwriter James Vincent McMorrow. Gavin joined fellow Dubliners Kodaline on their sell out UK tour in 2013. He has also shared the stage with Lianne La Havas, Marina and the Diamonds, and Ingrid Michaelson in recent months.
Ten Tours Orchestra

Ten Tors Orchestra is the resident professional ensemble of Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University. It was established in 1998 and takes its name from the many Tors, the highest points around Dartmoor.
The orchestra’s annual programme includes regular concerts in Plymouth, Tavistock and Totnes and contributes to regional festivals and celebrations including the Peninsula Arts Contemporary Music Festival at Plymouth University.
The Cornish Wurzells

The Cornish Wurzells feature banjo, sousaphone and now an accordion (that is very much more than an accordion) the Cornish Wurzells present the sound of the Wurzels from the original classic Adge Cutler era including the memorable vocals and irrepressible humour from leader Russ Holland.

Paul Coles (Drums), Pete Golden (Bass), Goose (Guitar) have played together for around 20 years in several bands, and are all experienced and superb musicians with Jim Easton (vocals) and Justine (Vocals) they play covers from Pink, Kings of Leon, Beatles, Stones, The Killers, Stereophonics, Jessie J, Queen and even Lady GaGa gets the AfterShock treatment. They go down a storm where ever they play and are getting a well earned name for themselves.

Phil Lewis is a multi talented performer covering a wide range of musical styles from artists such as David Bowie, Gary Moore, Snow Patrol, Rolling Stones, Kaiser Chiefs, Greenday, Status Quo, Nirvana, Steve Earl, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Billy Idol, Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. These feature in his electric set accompanied by his own self recorded unique backing tracks. Phil's diverse vocal talent and his own passionate virtuosity on lead guitar have impressed and won him fans wherever he plays.
