Plymouth festival celebrations set sail
Plymouth Festival of Sail
Plymouth Hoe and The Barbican
Wednesday 26 June to Sunday 7 July 2013
Plymouth's inaugural Festival of Sail has got underway with many events and activities taking place around the waterfront area on the Hoe and Barbican until Sunday 7 July and culminating with the biennial regatta of Plymouth Race Week.
There are events for all the family on and off the water this year including the Routes des Princes, a new European multi hull sailing race (26 to 29 June), the return of the P1 Powerboats (29 to 30 June), Armed Forces Weekend (29 to 30 June), and Plymouth Race Week (4 to 7 July).
Other highlights include the Tanner brothers - Chris and James - cooking on Commercial Wharf and live music from Steve Harley.
At the Routes des Princes sailing event visitors will have a fantastic opportunity to see world-class 70ft yachts racing in the latest leg of this international competition. Throughout the event visitors will be able to purchase locally produced food from a wide range of stalls on the Historic Barbican and Sutton Harbour during the day. There will also be live musical performances from talented UK acts who will entertain the crowds on Plymouth Hoe on the 28 and 29 June from 5pm.
Plymouth will also be hosting its annual Armed Forces Day event on Plymouth Hoe on 29 June. There will be Armed Forces displays on land, sea and air from current personnel, veterans, cadet forces, support agencies and charities. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of air displays, view military vehicles and see live entertainment on stage.
The adrenalin-filled P1 Powerboats race will return to Plymouth Sound on the last weekend in June. Plymouth Hoe will be the perfect place to view the powerboats as they go head to head to compete in a number of races.
At Plymouth Race Week there will be a colourful array of sailing races to enjoy. Throughout the week there will be a range of dazzling events designed to ensure that the shoreside entertainment is every bit as spectacular as the sailing. There will be a dedicated, fully licensed race village on the Barbican offering food, live entertainment, trade stands and daily prize-giving.
