Police seeking key witnesses to fatal A38 pedestrian collision

Police have re-issued their appeal to trace two people who they believe are key witnesses to a collision on the A38 on Sunday 14 July and may have vital information which could assist with the investigation.

A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a Nissan van near the Lee Mill Industrial Estate on the eastbound carriageway at about 10.30pm. The 47-year-old man was from Smithaleigh in Devon.

The man and woman who are believed to be witnesses, were travelling in a red car, which may have been an old style Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo or similar. It had English plates but the couple were Romanian or Polish.

They stopped just after the scene of the collision.

The woman is in her mid 20s, petite, with short dark hair in a short ponytail.

The man is in his late 20s to early 30s, of average build, with short dark hair, and he was wearing a red t-shirt.

Anyone with information, particularly the witnesses in the red car, is asked call police 101 quoting JI/13/572 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A 57-year-old man from Bristol who was arrested by Avon and Somerset Police on Monday (15 July) has been released without charge.

The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed he may have been hit by more than one vehicle. A forensic post-mortem is due on Wednesday (17 July) and formal identification will take place in due course.
